iPhones in the future could be powered by Apple’s 6G modem, as per reports

Apple was said to be working on 5G modem for iPhones but new reports say the company is looking much ahead of the time. Here are the details.

Apple has been working on its own 5G modem for iPhones which was supposed to be launched in the coming years. But a recent development involving a deal with Qualcomm suggested the plans have changed. And now, a new report hints that Apple may have actually stopped work on the 5G modem, instead it is ready to make a 6G modem for iPhones.

It is interesting to see the focus change from 5G to 6G but that could also be possible because Apple already has a strong deal with Qualcomm that continues to provide its 5G modems for the iPhones, which makes it a win-win situation for both the companies. So, it kind of makes sense for the Cupertino-based giant to build for the future, which comes in the form of 6G networks.

The Bloomberg report mentions that Apple has been working on the 6G modem since 2021 and it wants to be ready when the network rolls out, which is estimated for sometime around 2030. The report says Apple has started extensive ground work and research on 6G technology which allows the company to have a head start by the time 6G networks go public, and enable Apple to offset the higher costs of dealing with companies like Qualcomm for modems.

Apple has managed to upstage other chip makers with its high-performance M-series silicone that is available with Macs, iPads and more.

But developing a modem is a different ball game and the company clearly realises the task on its hands to make the 6G modem, which explains its supposed planning almost 2 years back. Countries like India have also started planning for 6G networks, which as per the country’s regime, should be rolling out by 2030. We are still waiting to see the true potential of 5G networks but excitement is already building up for 6G now that Apple has entered the scene.
