SpaceX and Starlink want to offer the service in the next few years.
Starlink is going to be the satellite provider while SpaceX does the heavy lifting for the company and make the service available.
SpaceX will have its satellite to phone internet service available to consumers by next year. The company wants to bring its internet service to regular smartphones which makes it appealing for consumers from all corners.
The space company plans to have as many satellites launched in space as possible by next year to get the service up and running. SpaceX has been offering satellite internet service with plans already in place to offer 2 Mbps LTE internet speeds on mobile by 2025.
SpaceX can also deliver on its promises if it manages to successfully have the satellites ready to operate and provide services back on Earth.
The company is going to rely on Starlink satellites for the internet service and the perfect tag team could ensure the satellites are being populated up there so that gradually the internet service can be made available to a wider market. Reports say SpaceX plans to have over 100 flight launches in the next two and half months which suggests an end of 2023 timeline for the release.
Next year, SpaceX wants to have 12 flights taking off every month, which brings the total count of satellites to 144. The reason to delay the high-speed LTE service to 2025 is because SpaceX needs bigger satellites that will be launched with the SpaceX Starship launch vehicle.
The internet service on the phone via satellite will be accessible to select telecom carriers like T-Mobile who explain that you can use the service on the land, lakes and coastal parts of a city.
If you want the internet to work in the middle of the ocean, customers will have to buy Starlink’s maritime service. Either way, it is interesting to see the evolution of satellite networks and how they can possibly work on regular phones without needing to spend big on those special satellite phones.
