Shiv Sena UBT leader Abhishek Ghosalkar was shot dead in suburban Mumbai on Thursday evening during a Facebook Live by local activist Mauris Noronha, who also ended his own life

Following the murder of Shiv Sena UBT leader Abhishek Ghosalkar, opposition parties are blaming the Eknath Shinde-led Maha Yuti government for the “deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra”, while also demanding the resignation of state home minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Ghosalkar was shot dead in suburban Mumbai on Thursday evening during a Facebook Live by local activist Mauris Noronha, who also ended his own life. The incident came less than a week after BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad shot and injured Mahesh Gaikwad, a leader from Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, at a police station in Ulhasnagar, Thane district.

However, while speaking with the media, deputy chief minister and home minister Fadnavis slammed the opposition for “politicising the murder of Abhishek Ghosalkar”.

“The killing of a young leader Abhishek Ghosalkar is very serious and unfortunate. It has happened out of personal enmity. They (Abhishek Ghosalkar and Mauris Noronha) were seen together on many occasions. Their posters were put up together even in 2024. This must have happened out of some differences. The police have come across some of the reasons and that will be made public soon,” said Fadnavis. “This incident has nothing to do with the law and order situation in the state as alleged by the opposition.

The other deputy chief minister of the state, Ajit Pawar, described the murder as “unfortunate” and “wrong”. While reacting to a media question in Pune, Pawar said, “Such incidents should not happen anywhere. Both were seen having friendly conversations during Facebook Live, which also suggests that they were known to each other and had a very cordial relationship. More details will emerge in the police investigation.”

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut recently started a series of daily posts on social media site X, with photographs of chief minister Eknath Shinde along with people having criminal records or backgrounds. Raut termed the Maha Yuti government “Goonda Raj”. “There is no fear left of the law and police among goons who have a political backing, and hence such instances are happening in the state and the home minister of the state is nowhere to be seen,” he said.

Ghosalkar, a 40-year-old former corporator from the Shiv Sena UBT, was killed by Noronha while they were doing a Facebook Live in Borivli West. According to the police, Noronha fired five rounds at Ghosalkar and then shot himself.
