Apple continues to lead the segment even though sales have dropped
Tablets became popular during the pandemic but since then demand has dropped, even for brands like Apple.
The global tablet market continues to stutter as people have clearly stopped buying tablets across all price ranges. The latest industry figures illustrate the same problem for brands like Apple, Samsung, and even Amazon to some extent.
The demand was mostly aided by people staying indoors for work and school, which meant tablets were the ideal device for their usage. But not anymore, and even the likes of iPads are feeling the pinch. Every brand in the tablet market has seen a drop in the units shipped in Q3 2023 and their market share in the negative.
This is after a slew of brands entering the tablet segment this year, brands like OnePlus, Oppo and a few more showing their strengths and looking to translate their success in the mobile category. But the list is still mostly about the usual suspects which means the newbies still have a long way to go before they come into the reckoning.
Things get further complex this year because Apple decided against refreshing the iPad lineup which is still the market leader in tablets that tells you where Android stands as a platform for this form factor. We have seen Android improve and become a lot more functional and powerful on tablets but there is still a long way to go before it becomes a serious iPadOS rival.
Reports say Apple will completely refresh the iPad series both Air and Pro models in early 2024. The company itself is not making enough dough from selling iPads which probably suggests the upgrades need to be significant to make people upgrade from their current model and get them to spend on the newer, possibly pricier models.
India is still dabbling in the affordable category which explains why you have brands like Redmi and Realme offering tablets for under Rs 20,000 with modest set of features.
