Thanksgiving came early this year for movie theaters — or at least those theaters where “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was playing. Correction: Make that “where ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ is playing.” The movie, which broke box office records after its Oct. 13 opening, was still in theaters when last we checked, single-handedly offering a ray of hope to a beleaguered industry.
Er, we may have to scratch that “single-handedly,” too. Advance tickets sales for “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” (opening Dec. 1) have also been stratospheric.
Back in the real world, there’s a whole slew of other, non-concert movies on the horizon in what is known as the holiday movie season, which kicks off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas Day. That’s when the buzziest Oscar contenders — the weird and the wonderful — arrive, along with fun family films, prestige biopics and, at least this year, two Holocaust-themed heavyweights: “The Zone of Interest,” a drama set in the household of the commandant of Auschwitz, and “Occupied City,” Steve McQueen’s four-hour-plus documentary about the occupation of Amsterdam from 1940 to 1945.
Here’s what we’re looking forward to most.
