All-rounder Imad Wasim believes that mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who is a travelling reserve with the Pakistan squad, can make an impact like Fakhar Zaman if provided an opportunity in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.
Abrar can only make the World Cup squad as a replacement for an injured player.
There were some media reports that Abrar might come in the squad for Shadab, as Shadab had suffered a concussion during a match against South Africa and missed the crucial match against New Zealand in Bengaluru.
The chance for Abrar to join the World Cup squad hinges on being a replacement for an injured player. Media speculations suggested that Abrar might step in for Shadab, who suffered a concussion in a match against South Africa, causing him to miss a crucial encounter against New Zealand in Bengaluru.
However, the PCB expects Shadab to be available for Pakistan’s last group match against England in Kolkata.
Former left-arm pacer, Mohammad Amir, highlighted that the team management holds the key to such decisions.
“There was a chance of including Abrar Ahmed [in the squad] but Shadab said that he is fit and available for next match. [Hardik] Pandya was unfit and pulled out of the tournament himself, saying that India can include a fit player instead of him. So this was a chance to include Abrar but only team management can tell what they are thinking,” Amir said on a local TV channel.
Meanwhile, Wasim stressed the potential impact of players like Abrar, drawing a parallel to the impact Fakhar Zaman had on a match against New Zealand.
“We had been saying for a while that Fakhar Zaman is an impact player. Similarly, when Abrar will play, he will make an impact as well,” Imad said.
