Samsung needs a big reason to bring an Ultra model to its foldable lineup

Samsung is expected to announce the latest Galaxy Z foldables at an Unpacked event in July and it is possible that the brand will have more than two to showcase

Samsung is looking to revamp its foldable smartphone line-up with rumours of an Ultra variant in this segment. A couple of weeks back the Korean tech giants were being connected with the launch of a budget Galaxy Z Fold variant to reach a larger audience. However, it seems like Samsung is planning a complete overhaul of their Z Fold line-up with a new high-end Ultra foldable smartphone. According to a report from GalaxyClub, the rumoured smartphone will be bearing the model number SM-F958, suggesting that the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2024 will likely see the release of two Galaxy Z 6 Fold devices from Samsung.

As per 9to5Google, Samsung had previously assigned the number ‘6’ towards the end of a flagship-series device’s model number. In simple terms, products like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 were assigned with the number SM-F946 whereas the Fold 3’s model number SM-F936. This means that it would only make sense for Samsung to launch their upcoming device as SM-F956 which doesn’t quite seem to fit with the rumoured SM-F958 number mentioned earlier.

The number ‘8’ variant at the end refers to the Ultra models in the S series from Samsung. For example, Samsung’s S24 Ultra smartphone bears the model number SM-S928 whereas the S24+ reads SM-S926. This sudden shift in the model numbers signals that Samsung is, indeed, working on an Ultra variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. This means that the now-missing SM-F956 model number will likely be shifted to the budget variant of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Speaking of the phone’s release, the rumoured Z Fold 6 Ultra or SM-F958 has only shown up with the suffix N, meaning the device will launch in South Korea first. As for other regions, there is no sign of the same model number but that shouldn’t be a reason for concern. This new change in the Z Fold line-up from Samsung has been made with hopes of recovering the company’s lost market share while also delivering on the flagship front.

The company’s last smartphone in this segment was the Z Fold 5, launched last year with several high-end features. An improved camera system from the ‘Ultra’ line-up will likely be a boost for people looking for phones in this segment. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 bears a premium of Rs 1,54,999 whereas no figures have been released for the upcoming ultra variant in this segment.
